The recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam has had a considerable impact on tourism across Jammu and Kashmir, with a sharp decline in tourist numbers being reported. According to ANI, Rakesh Wazir, President of the Hotel and Restaurant Association in Katra, revealed that the incident has led to the cancellation of approximately 35 to 37 per cent of existing hotel bookings.

Speaking to ANI, Wazir explained that the terror attack has significantly disrupted the tourist inflow, even affecting regions such as Katra, which have historically remained peaceful. "The Pahalgam terrorist attack has had a significant impact on bookings. Cancellations are occurring continuously. As per our assessment, around 35 to 37 per cent of bookings have been cancelled so far," he said. He further pointed out that the number of pilgrims undertaking the yatra has also decreased drastically from around 45,000 visitors to merely 20,000–22,000 at present.

Wazir made a heartfelt appeal to potential tourists, urging them to reconsider their perceptions about the Union Territory. He stated that Katra, a major pilgrimage destination, remains unaffected and safe. "I appeal to people that the situation in Katra, in particular, was never disturbed before, nor is it today. The place where this unfortunate event occurred is very far from here. The overall situation in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is peaceful. There is an urgent need to change the misconceptions people harbour," he told ANI.

In a separate development, a man has been arrested at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine for impersonating a licensed porter. According to Police Station Bhawan officials, the accused, identified as Mast Ali from Harot Kot village in Surjan Dhar, Reasi district, was found operating without a valid registration or service card — a violation of orders issued by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office. Ali was unlawfully offering porter services (Pithu) to pilgrims visiting the shrine.

Meanwhile, the nation continues to mourn the tragic loss of 26 individuals who were killed by terrorists at Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam on 22 April. The attack has triggered strong diplomatic reactions and heightened security measures across Jammu and Kashmir.
