Lessons from Mr. Beast leaked pdf on scaling success:1. Keep the goal in mind. In the minutiae of every day work, people can forget the goal, so Mr. Beast reminds them that their goal is to make the BEST youtube videos.2. Writing things down enables scale. The entire origin of the doc is the fact that the team can no longer sit in a room together to understand the original vibe. Documentation enables scale. Many companies are resistant to writing things down, and tend to rely on relationship to work even as the business scales.3. Mr. Beast recommends people to read "The Goal." Work is a production line where we are trying to increase output given input. Identifying and managing the bottleneck matters when trying to maximize system output. How to succeed at Mr Beast Production: https://lnkd.in/gisN7JdX

Do you have a job, career, or calling? Understanding the differences can provide clarity:- A job is primarily a way to earn income.- A career involves more than just the current state, but the idea of progression towards something- A Calling implies a larger sense of purpose beyond yourself.A colleague recently discussed his calling to make different languages a non-issue in communication. Because it was a calling, he pursued it doggedly until he accomplished it, regardless of the obstacles in his way including company politics, resource constraints or technical challenges. I felt jealous of his higher purpose that drove this determination. What would it take to turn your job or career into a calling? #Job #Career #Calling #Purpose

Energizing to see Sloanies from all classes recently at the MIT Sloan NorCal gathering. My class got it together enough to take a picture at the photobooth! Shout out to Christina Cragholm for rallying us! Paul Konasewich, Katrina Rymill, Libby Lin, Joshua G., Samir Garg#mitsloan

"Are you worried about ageism?"I asked a friend this recently as we talked about job searching. It's a common concern in tech companies to be concerned that your employability declines once you reach a certain age. It's debatable what age that is, though in California people over 40 are considered a protected class similar to women and minorities. Here are a few tips to mask your age on LinkedIn1. Eliminate the year off of your education. While not everyone goes through college at the same age, a large majority do, and your age can be inferred from your year of graduation.2. Remove some of your historical job experiences. Even though you might be proud of your full job history, no one really cares what you did more than 5-7+ years ago. Eliminate your earlier roles to focus attention on what you've done recently and not your age.3. Reconsider listing your years of experience in an executive summary. This may draw too much attention to how experienced you are. For me, I think the cutoff is 15 years, perhaps a stretch for 20 or down to 10 years. 4. Remove old recommendations. Linkedin did a big push some years ago to encourage recommendations, people may have some. Still, recommendations from 5-7+ years ago, while they may be wonderful, aren't as helpful as recent recommendations. Get some fresh ones for your profile and hide the older ones from view. What tips do you have to combat ageism as you search for jobs?#hiringtips #ageism

Last week I posted about referring a colleague to a role that she landed. Some thoughts on referrals:- Referrals represent you. The quality of your referral is a reflection on you as a professional. If you refer someone who is actually not very good, this reflects on you.- Referrals are more meaningful if they are in a field where you have expertise. I'm unlikely to get inmails for a job that I haven't done before or where I might not be a good fit, so I wouldn't refer someone for a job in legal (for example).- As a result of 1 and 2, I refer people whom I have worked with in the past and know the quality of the work to be excellent.Interestingly enough, I received several inmails requesting referrals. Sorry to disappoint, but I won't be able to refer you if I don't know your work. If you're looking for a way to get your resume noticed and get an interview, find a referral who can vouch for excellent work. If you can't find one, you have a different problem to solve.Job hunters, press on! There are still roles out there and a fit for you!#jobhunting #referrals #hope

I got someone a job and it took me less than 1 minute. How?A recruiter reached out to me for a role. I wasn't interested, and instead of just replying with the automated "no thanks," I gave the name of someone I thought might be a good fit. It turns out the person I referred is taking the job. It's a tough job market right now. Take a minute to be kind. You might change someone's life.#jobhunting

Implications of today's #crowdstrike outage. With the world converging on a few technologies and platform companies, we find ourselves in a position where very small slices of technology are owned by a few players.Large technology players MSFT, GOOG, AMZN, don't want to be that dependent on a third party whose error can cost the entire platform. These companies are going to spend the money on their own in house solutions if third party solutions can't be resilient enough, because in theory - they exercise more control. It's what Amazon did with shipping...What do you think?#cybersecurity #companystrategy #technologystrategy
